Why Buying Local Matters

Ask someone where their money is going and you'll learn a lot about their values (maybe even more than if you asked them directly). What does it mean when you buy from local businesses such as ours? The biggest thing (and what gets us most fired up) is that, as a consumer, you have the power to create demand for a product that requires sustainable, environmentally-friendly, animal-conscious practices, reducing demand for those that don't. Why does this matter?
Contrary to popular knowledge, hormone use in poultry is a non-issue (though companies market their products as hormone-free; it's actually illegal to use hormones with poultry). However, the threat of antibiotic use is real. Antibiotics are given to animals to protect against disease so they can tolerate the crowded conditions they are kept in. But there is another reason. Poultry (and other animals) put on weight more quickly when they are given antibiotics. Given those reasons, there is no economic incentive to decrease antibiotic use, even though antibiotic resistance is a real and growing public health threat.
You might just be interested in feeding your family the healthiest, most fresh eggs on the market. After all, we deliver eggs that are seven days fresh (or less). But maybe you want to do more, to make a statement and put your money where your mouth is. Our practices are cruelty-free and consider both your health and the health of our animals. No antibiotics, ever. The proof is in the flavor and color of your food and you can feel good about your choice to support a local, family-owned business. The societal impact is much larger, however. And it starts with one small choice.
